A bit about me.
I'm Kelly Owen – and I've spent 25 years helping organisations say what they mean.
I'm a communications and publications professional based in Cheltenham, with a career rooted in editorial project management, publications coordination and content quality. I've worked with government bodies, national charities, faith organisations, independent schools and creative agencies – and I've built Ultimate Proof into a trusted, long-standing editorial consultancy with clients who have stayed with me for years.
I'm not just a proofreader. I'm someone who understands how good communications are made – from the first planning conversation to the moment a publication lands in a reader's hands. Whether I'm checking a final proof, coordinating a newsletter series or supporting a communications team through a busy period, I bring the same calm, organised, high-quality approach to everything I do.
If you're looking for an experienced, reliable professional who cares as much about your content as you do – you're in the right place.
The longer version.
I started my career at a Cheltenham graphic design agency, working as a project coordinator and account manager on publications for clients including CNN International, Disneyland Paris and major consumer brands. It was fast-paced, deadline-driven work and it taught me early on that good communications don't happen by accident – they happen because someone organised, experienced and calm is making sure everything comes together properly.
From there I spent nine years as Publications Officer at Natural England – the government body responsible for protecting and managing England's countryside. I managed complex publications including a major report to parliament on Coastal Access, coordinated design and print contractors, worked with stakeholders from Defra to St James's Palace, and helped shape the organisation's brand identity and writing guidelines. It was serious, purposeful work and I loved it.
In 2004, I founded Ultimate Proof, initially offering proofreading and editing to businesses across the UK. Over the years the work grew – I built a small team of freelance editors, took on increasingly complex editorial projects, and developed relationships with clients including Tearfund, Stewardship, Christians Against Poverty, Wellington College and the University of Portsmouth.
In 2022, I returned briefly to employed life as
Communications Officer for the Diocese of Gloucester, producing publications, writing news stories, supporting campaigns and helping the diocese communicate clearly with congregations and clergy across the county. I loved being part of a team again – and it reminded me how much I enjoy working inside an organisation with a clear mission, not just alongside one.
What drives me.
I'm a practising Christian, and faith is at the heart of why I do what I do. I want my work to matter – to contribute in some small way to something bigger than a deadline or a word count. That's why my clients are mostly charities, faith organisations, schools and conservation bodies. It's why I wrote and self-published a children's book, The Dragonfly Story, to support bereaved families – a project that was shortlisted from almost 40,000 entries for a JustGiving Award in 2018 and has since sold over 10,000 copies. And it's why, when I think about the next chapter of my career, I find myself drawn to organisations working in conservation, heritage, faith and education – places where communications genuinely serve a purpose.
How I work.
I'm organised, calm and reliable. Clients describe me as easy to work with, clear in my communication and dependable under pressure. I don't add noise to a project – I reduce it. I'm at my best when I've been given a clear brief and the autonomy to get on with it, and I take real pride in delivering work that reflects well on the organisations I support.
I work from my home office just outside Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and am available for remote or hybrid engagements across the UK.
"Kelly is consistently reliable, delivering results with impressive speed and always going the extra mile."
